    To become a better reader, use Sue’s Strategies Syllable Practice for Reading Accuracy & Fluency workbooks.

    While using the instruction and exercises in these workbooks, Individuals divide words into syllables and sound out each syllable to achieve over 90% reading accuracy. Instead of memorizing whole words, students achieve success by connecting sounds to corresponding letter(s) in chunks known as syllables. With practice, students increase their speed and self-confidence. This workbook series begins with 2 syllable words and advances to 4 & 5 syllable words to support the needs of students at different levels. Most people love the results gained from learning and implementing the skills.

    SUE’S STRATEGIES® WORKBOOKS CONTAIN THE FOLLOWING:

    • Instruction on Sue’s syllabication strategies of Share & 3/4, (NEW NAMES FOR O-G VCCV AND VCV) plus the Magnet strategy;
    • Phonetic instruction to identify the vowel sounds of the 6 different, syllabic groups;
    • Teaching of position to determine the correct sound of single letters as well as letter teams that make more than 1 sound such as all 6 vowels, C, G, S, and many suffixes;
    • Suffix instruction that begins in Book 1.5 and continues in each of the following texts;
    • Chapters that target a specific skill while reviewing previous instruction;
    • Practice exercises of 20 words per page.

    Q.  WHY ARE PHONETIC STRATEGIES ESSENTIAL?

    Although some children seem to be born with an internal camera that remembers words, some children cannot memorize most words by looking at them. These students need a different reading method. Sue’s Strategies® phonics fills that need.

    Step 1: Learn the sounds for every letter, letter combination, and suffix.

    Step 2: Syllabicate the words because reading a few letters at a time is much easier than reading a large word. Also, position within a syllable determines the correct sounds for letters that make multiple sounds.

    Q. WHY ARE PRACTICE EXERCISES IN SYLLABICATION SO IMPORTANT?

    No more guessing! Dividing words into small syllabic chunks makes reading easier because a student sounds out words one syllable at a time.

    Since each vowel makes 3 sounds, students need to syllabicate a word correctly to determine by position which vowel sound is correct.

    Syllabicating the words enables the student to choose the correct sound by the letter’s position in the syllable.

    As suffixes sometimes stick to a root word and at other times separate from a root word, students must learn these strategies to read the vowel sounds and the suffixes correctly.
    Students learn the sounds represented by letter(S) and then practice applying the correct sounds in the correct syllables. These 2 steps result in long term memory.

    After sufficient drill and practice, each student achieves mastery of the skills and automaticity for reading. More practice, more success!

    Consequently, the student overcomes the challenging obstacles for reading accuracy.

    Q. WHICH WORKBOOKS ARE BEST FOR MY CHILD OR MY STUDENTS?

    Book 1 contains only 2 syllable words; Book 1.5 includes 2 and 3 syllable words. Most students begin with Syllable Practice For Reading Accuracy Book 1 or 1.5 in order to learn the strategies and feel successful.

    Book 2 contains 3 syllable words; Book 2.5, 3 and 4 syllable words. Books 2 and 2.5 review all previously learned phonetic facts, but they also teach 1 syllable suffixes. Some of these suffixes use the same letters from root words, but they are pronounced very differently as suffixes. Also, the vowel sound may vary depending on whether the suffix sticks to the root word or separates from it.

    Books 3 and 3.5 review all previously learned phonetic facts, and they include instruction for super suffixes, prefixes, and unusual suffixes. Book 3.5 reviews every phonetic concept taught on each of the 38 review drills. These practice exercises are designed to build accuracy, speed, automaticity, and success. Spending FIVE minutes a night on a practice exercise is a very worthwhile learning investment!
